SIR BEDIVERE

Bedivere was one of the original members of Arthur's warband. He was a valuable strategist and loyal friend to Arthur throughout his reign. It was Bedivere alone who comforted the king as he lay dying on the battlefield of Camlann.

In Welsh tradition, he is known as Bedwyr, the valiant "spear wielder." Despite the loss of one hand, he was an exceptionally skilled member of the warband. It was said that he could draw blood from the wind with his spear. Arthur gave Bedivere the responsibility of administrator in Normandy. (153)

Being that Bedivere was the original best friend of the king, he sometims appears as the torn lover of Guenevere, a role that the later, literary Lancelot fulfills.
