IGRAINE
Igraine was the graceful wife of Gorlois, the Duke of Corwall. She was much loved by her husband who was a loyal supporter of Uther Pendragon. The king valued their friendship, as Gorlois as mature in years and his knowledge and experience were great assets upon the battlefield. However, their relationship turned sour when Gorlois brought his fair young wife to London and introduced her to the king. Uther fell in love with her at first sight and gave her all of his attention. He did his utmost to engage her in conversation, sent the finest foods to her table, and ordered his personal attendants to serve her. Flattered though she was, Igraine was a married woman and began to feel uncomfortable under Uther's gaze. The king's infatuation had not gone unnoticed by the duke, who then returned Igraine to Tintagel Castle. This action prompted a battle between the duke and king.
Uther managed to reach his love by the craft of Merlin who changed him into the likeness of teh duke which allowed him to freely enter the castle. Arthur was conceived that night.
Some say that Igraine received Uther, believing him to be her husband. Others say his disguise ws for the benefit of the guards alone and that Igraine secretly harbored and equalled Uther's passion. Whether Igraine loved him at this time or not, she did come to love him and it was a greaat a passionate love which lasted all of their days. After the death of Gorlois, Uther married Igraine, mother of his son Arthur. Theirs was a happy marriage, the people loved their High Queen and henceforth Igraine ruled alongside her husband as an equal partner.
