DINDRAINE

Dindrane was the daughter of King Pellinore and sister to Percivale. She was also the wise and virtuous guide to the Three Elect (those who achieved the Holy Grail) -- Galahad, Percivale, and Bors.

Dindrane united the three after their many adventures and temptations and led them to an awaiting ship. No sooner were they aboard when wind and wave mysteriously carried them off to a second ship. There they found a marvellous sword which Dindrane explained was the "Sword of Strange Hangings." She then went on to tell them the history of the sword and the story of the Dolorous Stroke.

Galahad was meant to wield the sword, but he found that the girdle could not hold its weight. On seeing this, Dindrane cut off her hair and used it, along with threads of gold and silk, to repair the girdle. The knights were inspired by this gestture and indebted to her knowledge and dedication to the Quest.

After returning to land, the strange adventures continued. While still in their company, Dindrane died after giving her blood to heal an ailing woman. The grieving knights placed her body upon a ship covered with black samite and set her adrift upon the sea.
